The third race on the card is the Grade 2 World Pool Bet With Tote Stakes, a sprint for two-year-olds over 1200 meters on the turf. This race is a significant test for young horses and features a field where the average runner has a high affinity for being progressive. Crawford Racing has entered an interesting runner in the form of the one-run, one-time winner Fish Tales. He will be guided by the lady who struck up such an incredible relationship with Multiple Graded Winner Star Major, Mickaëlle Michel. He is bred by Ascot Stud, sired by Heavenly Blue out of a mare named Caviar and is owned by a partnership consisting of Messrs Raphael Goolam, Tony Moodley, and Selvan Naidoo.
Mickaëlle’s mount is relatively unexposed, as he has only had one career start on June 7, 2026, at Turffontein, where the colt put in a very professional performance to win a Maiden Juvenile Plate over 1160 meters. He led for much of the way and showed a good cruising speed to win by 2.30 lengths in a time of 66.83 seconds. Because he has only run once and won, he comes into this race relatively unexposed but faces a much steeper climb in class against proven stakes winners.
Fish Tales wins well on debut under a brilliant driving ride from Callan
The current odds for the son of Heavenly Blue on Hollywoodbets is 25/1, having drifted out from an opening call of 16/1. While the odds suggest he is an outsider, his speed ratings indicate he could be better than his price implies. James has a horse that clocked an impressive 400-meter final burst of 23.0 seconds, which is under the 24.0-second recognised benchmark set for young horses who are progressive. Mickaëlle will need to navigate a wide draw from gate twelve, which is often difficult at Greyville, but the horse’s natural speed from his debut suggests he might try to get across and race near the front. He could be considered the “dark horse” of the race and be anything if he reproduces his debut run.
The top contenders in this field according to the official guide and the high-conviction time metrics include Gimme Some Luck and U S Ranger. Gimme Some Luck is currently the 1.33/1 favorite and is unbeaten in three starts, showing a high level of consistency with a top weighted rating for this race. U S Ranger is another major threat at 3/1 odds, coming in with impressive form and time metrics from the Eastern Cape World Series, and also rates highly in the panel discussions despite a wide draw. These rivals have run times that set a high standard, but James and Mickaëlle will be hoping their colt can find the necessary improvement to run well in this competitive Grade 2 sprint.
Race 4: Douglas Whyte Stakes (Grade 2)
ROYAL TIARA
Age: 2 (at last run)
Sex: f
M/Rating: 98 (at last run)
Owner: ASSM Racing Syndicate (Nom: Mr A Chadha)
Breeder: Mrs Vanessa Harrison & Winterbach Stud
Trainer: James Crawford
Breeding: Rafeef (AUS) – Captain’s Princess by Captain Al
Colours: Grey, dark blue epaulettes and sleeves, dark blue cap, grey stars

The Douglas Whyte Stakes, a prestigious Grade 2 race for two-year-old fillies contested over 1600 meters, serves as a key indicator of which young fillies will navigate the longer distances as they move into their three-year-old season. Crawford Racing is represented here by Royal Tiara, and she will have Callan Murray in the saddle for this Grade 2. The 1600-meter trip on the turf requires both speed and stamina, especially with the false rail set at 4 meters for this part of the meeting.
The two-year-old filly out of prolific sire Rafeef, was bred through a partnership of Mrs. Vanessa Harrison and Winterbach Stud and is out of the mare Captain’s Princess. Owned by the ASSM Racing Syndicate, she has now run four times in her career. In her most recent effort on July 4, she finished ninth in a Grade 2 race over 1400 meters, where she was positioned well by race jockey Callan Murray but failed to quicken in the closing stages. Her run prior to that was much more encouraging, as she finished second in the Devon Air Stakes at Greyville, beaten less than two lengths by Alice B Toklas. Callan will be hoping that the step up to 1600 meters today allows her to find a more comfortable rhythm and stay on better than she did in her last outing.
Royal Tiara runs a gallant second to Alice B Toklas in the Amusnet Devon Air Stakes
The Hollywoodbets odds for this filly is currently 8/1, showing a marginal drift from her opening price of 6/1. While she was somewhat disappointing in her last run, the betting market still respects her potential in this field. Her chances will depend on whether she can settle during the early stages of the race, as she over-raced in her penultimate start but still managed a strong second-place finish. James will be looking for Callan to use their good draw in gate four to get a good position without using too much energy for her to navigate the 1600M to her best ability.
The main dangers in the Douglas Whyte Stakes are Alice B Toklas and Marchland. Alice B Toklas is the current favorite at 7/10 and was considered unlucky in her last run when she was cramped for room, knocked, and bustled, yet she still finished second. Marchland is an unbeaten filly from the Eastern Cape with odds of 4/1, and her perfect record of three wins from three starts makes her a contender despite travelling from a centre considered as marginally weaker than the main racing centres. These top contenders have shown more consistency in their timing metrics than James’s filly, but Callan knows the horse well, and a return to her Devon Air Stakes form would put her right in the race when the whips are cracking, and the winning post is looming.
Race 10: HKIR In December Umngeni Handicap (Listed)
DAME OF TRIX
Age: 5 (at last run)
Sex: m
M/Rating: 98 (at last run)
Owner: Mrs G MacGregor, Messrs J N A Mantel, E G van den Berg & J J Zandberg
Breeder: Rathmor Stud (Nom: Mr M J A Ferreira)
Trainer: James Crawford
Breeding: Vercingetorix – Mystery Dame by Jet Master
Colours: Blue, broad yellow stripe, blue sleeves, yellow armbands, yellow cap, blue peak

The final race of the day is the Umngeni Handicap, a Listed event for all horses run over the minimum distance of 1000 meters on the turf. Crawford Racing has entered the seasoned campaigner Dame of Trix, who will be ridden by Kabelo Matsunyane. As this race is a handicap, the weights are assigned based on the merit ratings and with this race being over the minimum trip, good gate speed and tactics are important for success.
The five-year-old mare has run 16 times in total and although she has had her problems, these seem fully behind her now.WORLD She has a strong pedigree, being sired by the champion Vercingetorix out of Mystery Dame, a daughter of the legendary Jet Master. She is owned in partnership by Gwen MacGregor and Messrs Mantel, van den Berg, and Zandberg. In her last start on June 11, 2026, at Turffontein, she put in a brilliant performance to win a handicap over 1000 meters by 2.40 lengths, which put her below par run at Scottsville in her penultimate run where she finished tenth, in the rearview mirror.
Dame Of Trix struts her stuff on her first run on the Highveld under a good ride from Kabelo
The current Hollywoodbets odds for this daughter of Vercingetorix is steady at 10/1. She is considered a live runner in this field despite her odds, as she has good gate speed as well as having a natural good cruising speed. Kabelo will need to be sharp from her middling draw of gate eight, but her ability to fight all the way to the finish should see her run a forward race, especially when considering the confidence that would have flowed from her last good win.
The top contenders all seem to be at the top of the Hollywoodbets betting boards. The 3/1 favorite African Pride and the progressive Chapbook are two of the main contenders for the finale on Gold Cup Day. African Pride has the plum draw of gate one and Chapbook gate three. Their current form is also strong. Other statistical threats include Anuschka’s World, who has a high speed rating of 90, and Circumbendibus, who has been remarkably consistent in the sprint races he has contested. The competition will be fierce, but Dame Of Trix has proven she can overcome adversity and continue to run good races, especially over the minimum trip, and that, coupled with her courage and determination, could see her running a forward race.
