Hollywoodbets Kenilworth – Saturday, 11 January
RACE 2 – Equi-Feeds Maiden Plate – 1000M
ANGEL’S OASIS
Age: 3 (at last run)
Sex: f
M/Rating: 76 (at last run)
Owner: Mr P M Murugasa
Breeder: Klawervlei Stud
Trainer: B/J Crawford
Breeding: Querari (GER) – Counting Angels by Count Dubois (GB)
Angel’s Oasis has run four times, been placed in the top 5 in 75% of those runs, and her only unplaced run was in Yielding going over the Kenilworth 1200M. On Saturday she steps back in trip to the minimum distance where she has run her best races and is Louis Mxothwa’s first ride back after his nasty fall at Durbanville last year.
Although her best runs have been at Durbanville, if she can reproduce the form of those first two runs, she could be competitive in this Mixed Maiden Plate. She has been priced up very generously on Hollywoodbets at 14/1, and if you are willing to take the places (4 places) in a 14-horse field, ante post is 22/10.
Brett’s Comments
Disappointing last run, back to 1000M – expecting a better run.
RACE 2 – Equi-Feeds Maiden Plate – 1000M
CHAMPAGNE PROBLEMS
Age: 3 (at last run)
Sex: f
M/Rating: 72 (at last run)
Owner: Mr R T Mattheyse
Breeder: Beaumont Stud
Trainer: B/J Crawford
Breeding: What A Winter – Casual Diamond by Var (USA)
Champagne Problems has only had three racecourse appearances, but each one has seen a progression on the previous outing. Her last run was her best, finishing third in a thirteen-horse field. She was up with the pace most of the way up the lane at Kenilworth holding on to finish third.
Although she runs on Saturday in a Mixed Maiden Plate, she can continue to show improvement especially as she is over the minimum trip again at Kenilworth. Sean Veale takes the ride tomorrow, and as her stable companion, she has been priced up very generously as well on Hollywoodbets at 16/1, and if you are willing to take the places (4 places) in a 14-horse field, ante post is 22/10.

Working well – each way chance.
RACE 3 – Hobday Equestrian Enterprises B Stakes (MR Net 96) – 1200M
JAPANESE ROSE
Age: 4 (at last run)
Sex: f
M/Rating: 88 (at last run)
Owner: Wilgerbosdrift (Pty) Ltd (Nom: Mrs M Slack)
Breeder: Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein
Trainer: B/J Crawford
Breeding: Danon Platina (JPN) – Honorine (AUS) by Redoute’s Choice (AUS)
Japanese Rose has won two races early in her career both wins being at Durbanville. After a long rest she has slowly regained the form that won her those two races, running well in her last two races one at Durbanville, the other at Kenilworth over Saturday’s trip of 1200M.
In both her two wins she won both races from the front, but now has been taught to settle and her last two runs saw her running on well at the finish to finish second and fourth, respectively.
She has been priced up at 5/1 on Hollywoodbets for Race 3 on Saturday. She is advantageously drawn at 2 and has the services of the strong Louis Mxothwa in the saddle. With her last two runs showing her continuing to progress, she ticks the boxes to run well on Saturday.
Brett’s Comments
Improved last run – quartet chance.
Japanese Rose (red cap) runs second to the progressive Be Merry
RACE 5 – Paarl Dimant Class 4 (MR 80) – 1600M
MIDWAY
Age: 4 (at last run)
Sex: g
M/Rating: 71 (at last run)
Owner: Messrs A J Brand & S S Govender
Breeder: Klawervlei Stud
Trainer: B/J Crawford
Breeding: Pomodoro – Pacific Lights by Al Mufti (USA)
Despite Midway’s form being poor in his three runs since he broke his Maiden, the races that he has run in have had relatively strong formlines. Three runs back he ran poorly but, in a field, where winner of the Chairman’s Cup on King’s Plate Day, King Pelles won that race he contested. In his penultimate run, the winner of the last race on King’s Plate Day, Sail The Seas, won that race, which was his first run after a layoff.
His second run after that layoff he had a poor draw, and Kabelo Matsunyane opted to settle him at the back of the field and then ran on. He finished just under 7 lengths off Gentleman Joe. Tomorrow is his third run after the layoff but again he is drawn 10 in a field of thirteen which will probably necessitate again having to drop him out and allowing him to run on. He is right at the bottom of the bookmakers’ boards, priced up at 50/1, but it is his third run after the layoff, and his merit rating has dropped from an 80 to a 71, and he could run better than his odds.
Midway breaking his Maiden in facile fashion at Durbanville

Quartet Chance.
RACE 6 – Soetendal Estate Class 4 (Net Rating of 80) – 1600M
EXQUISITE
Age: 3 (at last run)
Sex: f
M/Rating: 82 (at last run)
Owner: Ridgemont (Nom: Mr Craig Kieswetter) & Mr Devin Heffer
Breeder: Ridgemont Highlands
Trainer: B/J Crawford
Breeding: Rafeef (AUS) – Super Elegant by Daylami (IRE)
Exquisite has only run six times and broke her Maiden at her last run. She has only run three times over 1600M and has not finished out of the top four in those three runs. Her last run was a win in Yielding going at Kenilworth on the Winter Course, which has the shorter run in of only 400M.
Interestingly, there has been no subsequent runners from that field, but her previous two runs over the 1600M have produced seven winners, so there should be no reason to suggest that she would be able to continue running competitively as she goes through the divisions.
The owners Ridgemont (Nom: Mr Craig Kieswetter) & Mr Devin Heffer seem to have a progressive filly. With the continuing good weather in the Cape, and the track continuing to run fast, her good gate speed should stand her in good stead in the Class 4 Handicap on Saturday, albeit from a tricky draw of eight. In the ante-post betting she is priced up as the second favourite at 5/1 on Hollywoodbets.
Brett’s Comment
Working well, expecting another competitive run.
Exquisite breaks her Maiden in good fashion over 1600M at Kenilworth
RACE 9 – Interbet Class 4 (Rating of 80) – 1200M
TWENTYTWENTYVISION
Age: 4 (at last run)
Sex: g
M/Rating: 74 (at last run)
Owner: Messrs G S Knowles, B Nunhuck & Wehann Smith, Mrs G MacGregor & Mr & Mrs D Naik
Breeder: Klawervlei Stud
Trainer: B/J Crawford
Breeding: Royal Mo (USA) – Winning Eyes by Qui Danzig (USA)
Twentytwentyvision loves the tight Durbanville circuit. His two wins both came over 1250M At Durbanville in September. He has run two runs since, both at Kenilworth over 1200M and has run seven and nine lengths behind Arctic Wizard.
He will need to put his best foot forward on Saturday and display the Durbanville form over the stiff Kenilworth 1200M. His Merit Rating has dropped one point, and he has a favourable draw of two, but his last two runs has seen him priced up at 33/1 for the Race 9 on Saturday.
Brett’s Comment
Needs to improve on current form.
Twentytwentyvision goes back-to-back in September at Durbanville
RACE 9 – Interbet Class 4 (Rating of 80) – 1200M
HEAL AND SOUL
Age: 3 (at last run)
Sex: g
M/Rating: 86 (at last run)
Owner: Mr P M Murugasa
Breeder: Ridgemont Highlands
Trainer: B/J Crawford
Breeding: Rafeef (AUS) – Hope Solo by Silvano (GER)
Heal and Soul has only had one run, but it was a very impressive run. In a field of 15, on debut, drawn 6 and after drifting in the betting, the son of Rafeef sat up with the pace, and after having a brief duel with Wave of Glory at the 200M, drew away impressively to win by just over a length.
Having the experience of his debut under the belt, he steps up into a Class 4 Handicap on Saturday, having been given a merit rating of 86 by the handicapper. He is drawn on outside rail at 14 in a field of 15 but has the expert hands of Louis Mxothwa to guide him home over the 1200M at Kenilworth.
He takes on some hardened handicappers, so this will be a good test for the unbeaten son of Rafeef. He could be anything going forward and could provide the Murugasa Family with a good days at the races if he continues on his upward trajectory. Hollywoodbets has priced him up as third favourite at 6/1.
